Rug Tufting

  • Saskatoon Makerspace 209 Avenue D South Saskatoon, SK, S7M 1P8 Canada (map)

Tufting is a type of textile manufacturing in which a thread is inserted on a primary base. Using a special tufting gun, short U-shaped loops of yarn are introduced through the fabric from the outside so that their ends point inwards.

Join us in an 3 part beginner course, where you will work side-by-side with our instructor to make a rug or wall hanging! We do have a variety of yarn, but we ask students bring at least 4 rolls their own 100% acrylic #4 medium yarn to ensure they get the colours they want! Students will learn the following:

1. The type of stand required for tufting

2. How to set up the fabric to tuft

3. How to safely use a tufting gun

4. Type of yarn to use for tufting

5. How to thread a tufting gun

6. How to design an original abstract image

7. How to "paint" with yarn using a tufting gun onto fabric

8. How to trim and clean up the tufted piece

9. How to finish the rug with glue and felt fabric

This is a three part class.
