tig welding
In this hands-on class at Saskatoon Makerspace, students will learn the fundamentals of Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding, a precision welding process used to join metals with a high degree of accuracy and control. Participants will learn how to set up and operate a TIG welding machine, a plasma cutter, as well as how to select and prepare materials for welding. The class will cover basic welding techniques, including how to create a puddle, add filler metal, and control the welding arc. Students will also learn how to work with different types of metals and materials, and will receive guidance on proper safety procedures. By the end of the class, students will have a foundational understanding of TIG welding.
This class is suitable for beginners with little to no experience in welding. All materials and tools will be provided.
Participants should bring:
- Close toed shoes (work shoes are preferred, and non-synthetic materials preferred), ensure that the laces are not frayed.
- Wear clothes that are sturdy and flame resistant (e.g. denim, cotton) as synthetic fibers (e.g. polyester) pose a personal hazard in the welding shop environment. Jeans and long sleeve shirt would be appropriate. Ensure that your clothing does not have frayed edges (e.g. around the cuffs of your pants)
Participants will be provided with:
- Metal shop PPE
- Safety glasses
- Ear Plugs
- Welding helmet
- Welding gauntlets
- Welding spats
- Welding beanie
